Exploring Emotions

Sessions available in: English, Dutch

What?

Emotions are the colours of life, they give meaning to it. They allow us to connect to our surroundings, to our loved ones, and to ourselves. But they can also be the biggest source of our sense of disconnection.

When we do not learn how to navigate our emotions, they can become big waves crashing over us, can feel suffocative, overwhelming, and might even make us lose our footing.

Instead, learning to balance and navigate our emotions do not start out as tsunami-sized waves, that leave in their wake a path of destruction. Rather, they start out as the water lapping at our feet. And when we do not pay attention, the waves crashing in will become bigger and bigger, until we are ultimately swept away by them.

We are born with bodies, which experience emotions, and often it is simply assumed that we know what to do with them, that we know what we feel, and that we know how this affects us. However, often it is not that clear. As a result, we inhabit our bodies and hope the best of it. But would you start driving a car without any instruction? Would you start operating a complex device without checking the manual?

All too often, we tend to think our emotions. We think about what happened and what might happen to cause these emotions and anything in between. Yet, emotions are meant to be felt. Learning more about our emotions, and how they affect our physical well-being, will help us to better understand our bodies. As a result, we will be able to take better care of our bodies. And (just like a car that has been taken good care of will have better performance and will last longer) a well-taken-care-of body (on the physical, emotional, and mental level), will live a longer, healthier life. Our society is already well-aware of the many benefits of a (physically) healthy lifestyle. Now, the next step is to integrate our emotions and to become aware of which impact they, too, can have on our physical bodies.

What to expect?

During these sessions, we will redirect our awareness of emotions from thinking to feeling. We will guide you to notice the early stages of emotions, when the water when is still lapping at your feet instead of crashing over you. Because in that stage, when you’re not feeling overwhelmed by it, you have a choice. You can still step away from it, or you can dive into it if that is what you want. But at least, if you then get wet, it will be by your own volition. That sense of empowerment will make all the difference in your life. It will allow you to transform emotions from a source of stress and struggle into one of wellbeing, harmony, and connection.

Things you will take away from these sessions:

  • You will learn about emotions, and where in the body they can be felt

  • You will learn about body language and facial expressions of emotions

  • You will learn to increase the gap between emotion and reaction, thus giving you the opportunity to respond instead of react

  • You will learn about emotional triggers

  • You will take a closer look at the stories you tell yourself
